题目:Development of a Wide Field Multi-Object Spectroscopic Facility - Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer

报告人:Kei Szeto(CFHT)

报告摘要:

Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is the first planned project among the future generation of massively multiplexed spectroscopic facilities. MSE is designed to enable transformative science, being completely dedicated to large-scale multi-object spectroscopic surveys, each studying thousands to millions of astrophysical objects. At a minimum, MSE will use an 11.25 m aperture telescope to feed 4,332 fibers over a wide 1.52 square degree field of view. It will have the capabilities to observe at a range of spectral resolutions, from R~3,000 to R~40,000, with all spectral resolutions available at all times across the entire field.

Starting from the science capabilities, the lecture describes the technical development of MSE from science, design, and operational requirements to its engineering implementation supported by a culturally and geographically diverse science and engineering teams that is centrally coordinated and managed by the Project Office.

报告人简介:

Graduated with the Master of Ocean Engineer degree from MIT in 1983, Kei joined the Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre of National Research Council of Canada in 1995. Since that time, he has participated in a wide range of international astronomy projects from instrumentation development to facilities design and upgrade such as the first adaptive optics system, Altair, for the Gemini northern telescope as well as the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrographs in collaboration with Royal Observatory Edinburgh. Continuing with his international work, he provided technical oversight and project management for the feasibility design of the Gemini GLAO facility and held group leader positions in design phase of the Thirty Meter Telescope project for the telescope structure, enclosure and the first-light facility AO system.

In 2015, Kei joined the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Corporation as project engineer of Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer. Currently, Kei is the Project Manager leading the programmatic planning and technical development of transforming the existing facility into a modern 10m-class observatory dedicated to wide-field multi-object spectroscopic observations.
