The story of “Resound Echoes” has been kept alive in the memory of the Chinese people in two millennia. It presents Chinese aesthetic practices and understanding of life’s meaning, highlighting an advocacy for peace and the constant pursuit of a better self, which has remained the spiritual core of the Chinese civilization. Deeply embedded in the blood of the Chinese people, this spirit has also enabled the Chinese nation to thrive among the peoples of the world.

Immersed in the scenes of “Resounding Echoes”, featuring a guqin player in a thatched cottage amid nature, this video live-streaming event will take the audience on a journey through history into an aesthetic space with rich cultural connotations. The life scenes of Chinese literati, displayed by both visual and auditory means, will help the audience understand the spiritual world of Chinese literati, which is characterized by the pursuit of harmony and the respect for nature.

Guqin, as the intangible cultural heritage of the world, ranks first among the four arts, namely,  “guqin, the game of go, calligraphy and painting”. As an instrument of self-cultivation for Chinese literati, guqin also contains China’s unique philosophical orientations, including understandings of the laws of the cosmos. Revolving around “guqin”, the exhibition also incorporated a variety of traditional cultural elements such as incense, pottery figurines, and calligraphy, presenting the audience a stunning view of oriental philosophy, by touching upon the ancient rites and music, an integral part of the profound Chinese culture.

Representative inheritor of guqin art (national intangible cultural heritage), Mr. Wang Peng was the curator of this event. During the event, he displayed more than 60 guqin made by Jun Tianfang in Art Hall 1. It was the first time for many of them to appear in front of the public. Among the exhibits were also guqin scores of different dynasties, pottery figurines of guqin players in the Eastern Han Dynasty, and “The Red Cliff Ode” by Yan Tianchi, a calligrapher of the Ming Dynasty. In this way, the audience, while enjoying the virtuoso guqin performance, were also intrigued by the historical traditions and stories in relation to guqin.

Art Hall 2 focused on four ancient guqin in Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties, and incorporated traditional cultural elements such as calligraphy, flower arrangement and incense lore. Different from the traditional style of curating, the exhibition featured a highly diversified space design which perfectly integrated artworks with interactive experiences, further narrowing the distance between traditional culture and the audience.

The “calligraphy” area was particularly attractive. “The inkstone for a scholar is as important as the mirror for a beauty”. Wang Yao, an inkstone carving artist explained the importance of inkstones for Chinese literati to the audience onsite: “Chinese poet Su Dongpo once exchanged his heirloom sword for his favorite inkstone. When Li Yu, the last monarch of the Southern Tang Dynasty, was captured by Song troops and taken to Bianjing, the only thing he brought with him was a green dragon-tail inkstone. Famous calligrapher Mi Fu was known for his love of inkstones. Actually, he once snatched an inkstone from the emperor himself. He even authored a book on the history of inkstones. Stories of scholars collecting inkstones and singing ode to them abound in history, reflecting the refined pursuits of the ancients.”

The event also featured guqin performance in the concert hall. Unlike conventional guqin performances with only one performer, this concert was designed to offer unparalleled audio-visual experience with immersive choreography. With guqin as the main musical instrument, the concert incorporated elements of flute, Taichi, vocal, percussion, cello and incense lore. A variety of traditional and modern art forms were adopted, with classical music pieces that reflect the natural and cultural landscapes of ancient China, as well as improvised cross-over performances of contemporary style, in a bid to convey the openness and inclusiveness of guqin arts. While enjoying the guqin performance, the audience were also intrigued by the beauty, strength, vitality and inclusiveness of Chinese culture.
