TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testified before the US House Energy and Commerce Committee in response to questions related to the so-called national security from the US congress on Thursday.
"Congressman, I have seen no evidence that the Chinese government has access to that data. They have never asked us, we have not provided it," refuted Chow.
"Mr Chew, does TikTok access the home WiFi network?"
"I'm sorry. I may not understand the..."
"So if I have a TikTok app on my phone, and my phone is on my home WiFi network. Does TikTok access that network?"
"It will have to get access to the network to get connections to the Internet if that's the question."
"Is it possible then that it could access other devices on that home WiFi network?"
"Congressman, we do not do anything that is beyond any industry norms. I believe the answer to your question is no."
"Mr. CEO when I open TikTok will TikTok have access to the phone battery." “CEO先生,当我打开TikTok时,它是否会使用我的手机电池?”
"Does tiktok access my camera to make tiktok videos?" “请问TikTok制作视频的时候会访问我的相机吗?”
"Oh congressman, there is no technology that is perfect in doing this. We have to deal with the reality of the country that you’re operating in. "
"Let me give you an example, congressman. In my home country Singapore, there is almost no illegal drug content, because Singapore has very strict drug laws."
中国日报推特微评栏目评论称:那些对技术一窍不通的美国国会老人们关注的是说教,而不是提出任何真正的问题,这与其说是一场听证会,不如说是一个道德绑架、哗众取宠的机会。
"I want to stop the misconception that it's just an app. It's so much more than that," said Duncan Joseph, who has more than 4.5 million followers on the platform. "If it were to be removed, these communities can't just go to another spot. This is the home … and you just can’t rip that social fabric away from so many people."
"A ban would be an entirely un-American, undemocratic and inappropriate response to an unproven risk," wrote Chris Stokel-Walker, author of TikTok Boom: China's Dynamite App and the Superpower Race for Social Media, in a recent article for The Washington Post.
