An exhibition featuring Guangdong artistic works of the Maritime Silk Road of Qing Dynasty was held at Nanjing Municipal Museum on September 19, and runs through November 21.

A total of 148 pieces of artworks which are housed at the Dongguan Municipal Museum, were on display.

They include porcelain, carving, embroidery, fans and other excellent artworks, representing the brilliant craftsmanship of Cantonese and the interaction bewteen the East and the West through the ancient Maritime Silk Road.

As one of the starting points of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, an ancient trade sea route linking China with the rest of the world, Guangzhou has always been a hub of cultural diversity.

During 17th and 18th centuries, new sea routes opened and the maritime trade between China and western countries developed fast.

To meet foreign market demand, kinds of artworks with Canton local characteristics and European flavor, such as wooden carvings, embroidery, ricepaperplant pith painting, were made in Guangdong and then exported to foreign countries.

These Cantonese artworks were highly favored by westeners at that time for their exquisite craftsmanship. Now, let's take a look at some of them.
