哥伦比亚大学傅氏基金工程和应用科学学院(以下简称哥大工程学院)成立于1864年,始终推动着工程技术的前沿发展,以适应人类社会发展需求。哥大工程学院在百余年中延续着不断创新的传统,提供了美国东海岸几乎最好的研究设施,比如创意机器实验室、数字视频与多媒体实验室、自然语言处理实验室和计算机视觉实验室。
作为蓬勃发展的产业之一,人工智能也是哥大工程学院的重点研究课题。日前,哥大工程学院院长玛丽·C·博伊斯(Mary C. Boyce)、高级常务副院长张世富(Chang Shih-Fu)和哥伦比亚大学机械工程与数据科学教授、创意机器实验室主任霍德·利普森(Hod Lipson)赴京出席2018哥大中国之夏·哥大工程学院人工智能北京高峰对话,并在活动结束后就他们眼中的人工智能跨领域合作接受了新华社中国财富网的采访。

“在中国和美国,研究员与产业之间的合作还有很多空间。”
“There is much room for collaborations between researchers and industries in the U.S. and China,” said Dean Boyce in an interview with the China Fortune Media Group under Xinhua News Agency.
博伊斯院长对中国财富网表示。她认为竞争并不是产业发展的常态,合作才是国家发展科学技术、打破边界的方法。合作对于社会和全球人民来说是很重要的,甚至可以帮助人工智能辐射各个产业。
Dean Boyce stated that collaboration is the way countries move the frontiers of technology and science. “That (collaboration) is important to our society and global population, and to how artificial intelligence will influence all sorts of industries.”
张世富教授是哥大数字视频与多媒体实验室负责人。他指出,近年来,在招聘和留住人才方面确实存在着良性竞争,也给企业的发展带来了好处,但是人工智能的发展过程还是要靠开放合作。
Professor Shi-Fu Chang said that “in the near term, there is competition while hiring talents, which is good. But the whole process of AI is through open collaboration.”
以图像识别为例,现在世界范围内有百余个研究小组在公共平台上分享各自的演讲、视频和研究进度,为解决图像识别领域的难题做出了贡献。张教授提到,有些数据、应用场景、解决方案是独创的,只有少数国家或地区可以提供,这就是跨国家与跨产业合作的必要性,开放合作才是创新的关键。
Professor Chang added that hundreds of research teams from around the world now contribute together, and share their lectures and videos for solving some challenging questions, including image recognition. “There are some problems, application scenarios and data that are unique and complementary that one country or region can offer. Open collaboration is the key for innovations,” said Professor Chang.
以博伊斯院长为首的哥大工程学院教职工近年来致力于实现一个愿景,即“哥大工程学院:是工程,更是人文关怀”。张教授认为人工智能的核心就是人文主义,或者可以叫做以人为中心的人工智能。
Chang pointed out that the Columbia Engineering and Dean Boyce had led the faculty members to develop a vision of engineering for humanity, which means man should be in control. “The key essence of the AI revolution should be so-called engineering for humanity or a human-centric AI aspect. It’s really about collaboration and how we share our values and emphasize the right priority.
利普森教授则提出,当遇到人工智能时,世界是平的。人工智能的门槛很低,从世界各地的人工智能新兴企业数量的爆发式增长就可以看出来。人工智能使得所有人空前地彼此接近,竞争者们都面对着均等的机会。
Professor Hod Lipson said that the world is flat when it comes to AI, and all competitors have an equal opportunity.
博伊斯院长也同意“人工智能让世界变平了”这一观点。“人工智能帮助中国跳过了信用卡支付阶段,创造出来很多非常新颖有趣的商业模式;例如支付宝和微信支付,就把大多数没有充分参与经济活动的人带入了现实社会。”她强调道。
Dean Boyce also agreed with the idea. “AI helped China to jump over credit cards and bring so many people who did not fully participate in the economy into the real world,” she said. She added that AI helped to create many incredibly interesting new business models, such as the Alipay and WeChat pay systems, and enabled a greater number of the population to participate more fully in the economy.
